Can someone ask for damages before engagement

I'm being threatened for legal action for not taking ahead the marriage talks. The man, girl's father is a lawyer, he visited my house regarding marriage talks. Then talks went ahead a my parents met with the girl once and engagement date fixed. I never met with girl but I also gave a go ahead to my parents as things were looking good. Once the engagement date fixed i expressed desire to talk to girl and meet. While talking i found out that our thoughts are so different and what was shown by her father is not true completely. And few other personal things that I shouldn't discuss. I talked to my family and and proposed to not to go ahead as it's a matter of  full life. Her father talked to me and he agreed that we shouldnt go ahead. And he said matter is closed from his side. Few days ago her father messaged me asked for 1 lac rupees as he had spent some amt. I just asked what were your expenses kindly share, he told he booked 26 train tickets and hotel token money for engagement. I said train tickets can be cancelled and engagement is a small ceremony, token money for hotel in a small town would be few thousands. I offered to give 50000, but he refused and threatened to see me in court. I come to basic family and i just don't want to get into legal trouble. I just can't stop thinking about parents. How they will take this. If you can help in some guidance
