Short circuit/ electrical accident at home being a tenant.
Dear Sirs/Ma’ams,
We recently moved into a rental house and unfortunately experienced a fire accident due to an electrical issue just a week after moving in. The cause of the accident is still unknown, but it resulted in damage to several electrical appliances, wooden cupboards, and blackened walls due to thick smoke. An electrician, sent by the landlord, inspected the house and informed us that the wiring is weak.
Following the incident, we informed the landlord of our decision to vacate the house, to which he agreed. He mentioned that he would not be returning our deposit due to his own losses, and we vacated the premises before the agreed deadline. However, shortly after our departure, the landlord performed an inspection and began threatening us, claiming that we would be held responsible for the damage or else he would file a complaint against us.
Despite our requests for him to inspect the property until three weeks of our stay following the accident, the landlord did not visit the house for inspection or discussion. I am seeking clarification on my rights in this situation.
