Your wife can change her name by notification on official gazette and 2 local newspapers
your child birth certificate can reflect your surname
Hello Kaanooni, I would like to get an advice on changing my new born baby surname, who is yet to get her birth certificate. And changing my wife surname who has registered her family surname name in the marriage certificate. Earlier this month, we are blessed with a baby girl in our family. And I'm yet to get hers birth certificate from meeseva. Before doing it, I would like to give my given name as her surname. For instance: My full name: Abhishek karampudi ( My given name is Abhishek and surname is Karampudi) My daughter name which I'm yet to register: Navya Abhishek. And at the time of marriage registration, my wife has chosen her full name as it was before marriage. And we have registered the same and continuing with it. Now she is interested in changing her surname to my given name "Abhishek". For instance: My wife full name before and after marriage: "Rekha Bhooshan" ( Rekha is her given name and Bhooshan is her surname name) Change it to: Rekha Abhishek. I would like to know if the both scenarios are possible in India, if so is there any particular process to be followed? By doing this, would me, my wife and my daughter face any challenges in future? Thanks,

your child birth certificate can reflect your surname
In your application to obtain birth certificate of your daughter, you can clearly mention the name you are desirous of naming your child with correct and proper spelling because once it is registered in the birth certificate it cannot be altered or modified.
To change your wife's name, she has swear an affidavit to this effect, duly notarized and published in local newspaper. After that she has to submit an application to get the name changed published in the government gazette publication along with the copy of notarized affidavit and copy of the newspaper.
Once that's is published in the government gazette, she can start using her new name ever after.
- She can execute an Affidavit for getting the same , and publish the same in official gazette
- Further, on the basis of official gazette , she can change her name in her documents but the name cannot be changed in the academic certificates.
- Further , the daughters name can be registered as per your wish after giving proof of both parents .
