There is no tax on money received from abroad to India, as long as it is a gift or a personal remittance. However, you may have to report the source and purpose of the money to the income tax authorities, if they ask you about it. You may also have to provide proof of your relationship with the sender and the reason for the money transfer.

If you received the money through Western Union, you may have to fill out a form called Form 15CA and Form 15CB, which are used to declare the foreign remittances to the income tax department. These forms are available online on the income tax portal or at the Western Union agent’s office. You may also have to submit a copy of your PAN card and a valid ID proof.

If you received the money in cash, you may not have to fill out these forms, but you may still have to keep a record of the transaction details, such as the sender’s name, address, and country, the amount and currency of the money, the date and mode of receipt, and the purpose of the money. You may also have to keep a copy of the receipt or confirmation from Western Union.

If you do get a query in your income tax portal on this, you should answer it honestly and provide the relevant documents and proofs as mentioned above. You should also explain that the money was sent by your boyfriend because his card was blocked and that it was not your income or taxable amount. You should also mention that your income is zero and that you did not have to pay any taxes previously.

The amount of Rs. 20,000 received by you will not attract income tax at all.

If there was any suspicious activity namely illegal money laundering activity only then you may be questioned otherwise this is not a matter of concern.

You don't have to be worried about this money received as gift.
