• Change my name as an Indian living in the US

I currently do not have a Surname in my Indian passport, and would like to remedy that. My given name is my <First name> <Middle name> <Last name>. I would like to correct my name to be Given Name <First name>, Surname <Last name>, and delete my <Middle name>.

VFS has informed me that I cannot just provide an affidavit stating so to them, and need to publish a notification in the both the US and India, and furnish 2 documents with this new name in order for my name to be changed on my passport. But how can I provide 2 documents when I cannot change my name on my passport?

If it is pertinent to change your name in the passport by adding surname to it, then you may have to initiate the process for change of name.

VFS is not the authority to approve your preference in this regard.

VFS will take up your case only if all the documents are proper and legally valid to provide you the visa.

You may ahve to prepare an affidavit for name change, get it notarised, get it published in two local newspapers and then effect the change of name in your AADHAR card, PAN Card or electoral photo identity card after getting the name change effect through government gazette publication.

This procedure will enable you to get your passport reissued with your surname added to it and then apply for visa as desired.

In your passport reissue application, if you want to change your name from the existing name to the desired name, you may have to provide an affidavit duly notarised along with the documents you rely upon to support of reissue application.

Dear client,

If you want to add a surname to your Indian passport, you will need to follow the procedure laid out by the Indian government. As per the current process, you will need to advertise your new name in two newspapers (one in India and one in the country of your current residence) and provide a copy of the advertisement along with an affidavit, stating that you have changed your name.

In addition to the affidavit, you will need to provide two supporting documents that show your new name. However, if your current passport does not reflect your new name, you can use other documents such as your Aadhaar card and PAN card to support your name change request. You can provide these documents along with the affidavit and newspaper advertisements to the passport office.

It's important to note that the name change process can take some time, and you may need to submit additional documents or information as per the passport office's requirements.

It is also important to consult with a legal expert or passport office for specific guidance on the process and requirements for adding a surname to your Indian passport.
