Hi, Few years ago, my photograph was on my college website. After that many other institutes used it for their advertisements without my knowledge or approval. Recently one institute again advertised on platforms like instagram and facebook without my knowledge. How can I proceed with this legally? How much compensation am I bound to receive from this?

This is a breach of your right to privacy and hence suitable compensation may be demanded from the violators.
It depends upon the scale of violation and the damage caused.

if someone's used photo for some commercial purpose or some fun activity or for any purpose which the person whose photo is taken may think wrong then the person has the right to Sue for Defamation.
See you can issue them a legal notice and ask for damages for using your photograph without your permission in the advertisement as same breach the privacy and your photo cannot be used without permission. if the photo is used widely then you can claim compensation to the tune of 20-30 lakhs.
You can file a criminal case against all these institutions for using your photographs without your permission and claim the compensation from all this institution in case you want to go Hare criminal case then you have to approach to the police station otherwise you can file a civil suit for the compensation in the district court

You can send them notice and if not adhered by Institute them you can file civil suit for damages and injunction for restraining to use your pic
Did you study in that institute? If yes, did you sign a form to allow it to use your credentials for its publicity? If the answer to both these questions is in negative then only you can file a suit for mandatory injunction to direct it to immediately remove your photographs.

Your civil right is infringed without your permission as such you can claim huge compensation.
You send a legal notice to them seeking compensation for using your photograph without your consent and strictly warn them from using it anymore in future or else to face the music of law in this regard.
If you dont get any proper response or they did not bother about this then you may drag them to the court of law for compensation and also direction to restrain them from using your photograph in future
